Night of the Smoking

A pioneer in many ways and a one-of-a-kind couturier who marked the history of fashion, Yves Saint Laurent was above all, a visionary spirit and a playful mind. He invented dress codes and lines and pieces that nobody would have dared to considered appropriate, good or beautiful for a woman to wear. The Safari jacket or la blouse roumaine may be only some of these instances. Then in the mid-60’s he invented the courageous, timeless smoking. It was time for women to start flirting with their understated, refined masculinity and make the most of it. It was the time of a major fashion revolution. From that moment on, Yves was the couturier who made the tuxedo an outstanding piece for women and an icon for his house as a whole.

Tuxedos are classy and classic, elegant and sophisticated, clean and powerful and no matter how manly a message they convey, women will always wear them in absolute grace. After Yves, fashion was never tired of reinterpreting it. And these latest seasons were the mere proof. Starting with Haider Ackermann, moving on to Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, Sonia Rykiel, Tomas Maier or Karl Lagerfeld, to name a few, they all fell in love with the subtle beauty of a tux.

Tomorrow night, ladies and gentlemen, it’s time for us all to raise the bar and return to the precious codes of étiquette. Let’s do the class all the way! Let’s put our best tuxes on, the impeccable white shirt, style it up with a bow tie and celebrate a timeless piece! Have le pantaloon smoking or le pantalon cigarette, use white or black or black and white, bring out your cufflinks and, if you prefer, dare to go for ascots and handkerchiefs! Add a bit of drama to your make-up and let your hair go loose or straight. Let’s make a crowd to remember! Let’s go back to the mid-60’s of Yves Saint Laurent and Betty Catroux and Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve. Let’s go back to the time when fashion was chic and style was everything! Let’s make Monsieur Yves proud!
