From Paris with Love

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

Paris Fashion Week is not an easy bet. You can miss New York and London and Milan but if you manage to check Paris in your fashion tour agenda, you can say you got it all. There are 100 shows in nine days…which means a lot of time and energy and “i’ll just grab a quick bite” and “burn my lip with this hot coffee” but “man! i gotta make it to that show!”. And it’s also about the drama, the waiting, the glamour, the spotlights, the celebrities, the paparazzi camped in front of the Ritz, the feeling of having Anna Wintour’s glasses just across the room, of waving back at Lagerfeld in an extatic overflow and it’s always about Paris and its endless je ne sais quoi.

So maybe this season critics weren’t so enthusiastic with Phoebe Philo’s view of the next Celine summer, maybe there’s some mise-en-scene missing at Dior, maybe Olivier Roustaing’s first season at Balmain was more than we feared and less than we expected, maybe John Galliano will never get its theatrical magic back without its master and maybe Margiela’s playing a bit too retail-wise. However, this was again the best time of the year. We loved Karl’s underwater experience at Chanel, Ackermann’s inexhaustible, understated sexiness, Isabel Marant’s cool ways and Alexander McQueen’s artful retro mood and Gaultier and and Dries van Noten and Lanvin.

Fashion Weeks are over but we’re left with the promise of a gorgeous summer. And till then, there’s this fall to enjoy and some whole lot of fashion to dress, dance and sing to!
